Chamber of Commerce

Organized in Early 1951

Discussion on organizing the Chamber of Commerce began in January 1951 and the Chamber came into being at a meeting on February 8, 1951. It became a corporation on the 25th day of February 1952, when seven citizens did form and incorporate themselves into a voluntary Association under certain terms. The name of the corporation was the Pleasanton and North Chamber of Commerce. The purpose Pleasanton for which this corporation was formed was to organize a Chamber of Commerce with the power to provide and maintain suitable rooms for the conduct of its business, and to establish and maintain uniformity in the commercial usage of cities and towns; to acquire, preserve and disseminate valuable business information; and generally to promote the interest of trade and increase the facilities of commercial transactions. This corporation was formed effort the exclusive purpose of promoting the public interest of Pleasanton and North Pleasanton, Texas. The directors for the first year were seven in number and their names are as follows: Charles A. Dobbins, Pleasanton; M.A. Eklund, Pleasanton; E.F. Yerkes, Pleasanton; Charles H. Troell, Pleasanton; Roy Quillian, Pleasanton; W.E. Winn, North Pleasanton; and Charles Lott, North Pleasanton. By the end of the first year, they had a total membership of 75 people. This corporation is to exist for fifty years from the date of February 25, 1952 and a document is filed in the Secretary of State to this effect. The first secretary of the Chamber was Nora Brite and she held this office until 1974 when she retired. Dr. Ben Parker coined the phrase ”Birthplace of the Cowboy”. In 1969, local artists were invited to submit drawings to go with that saying to become the Pleasanton logo. Dr. Parker headed the selection committee, which was made up of Chamber of Commerce directors. Thelma Cardwell’s submission was chosen and has been used since then as our official logo. The present home of the Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce is located at 605 Second Street. The log home is an original Boyne Falls Log Home designed and built in 1980 by Thompson American Log Homes of Wimberley, Texas for the Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce. The 2006-2007 Board of Directors consist of fifteen directors and they are: Tammy Gonzales, President; Mary Yow, 1st Vice President; Susan Netardus, 2nd Vice President; Georgina Schmahl, Secretary to the Board; Preston Moore, Treasurer; Rey Rodriguez; Jennifer Wilson; JJ Owens; Brad Tipton; Lawrence Trevino; Kendall Schorsch; Adrian Gutierrez; Wesley Shearrer; David Garcia and Bill Havins.
